Letter from Searchers President, Kim Strange:
Hello Searchers. I have some news to share regarding the club’s lapidary shop.
First, I need to let you know that our long-time Shop Chair, Adrian Callard, has decided it is time for him to step down as Shop Chair. Adrian is a long-time member, a constant supporter of the club and has been the Shop Chair for as long as I can remember. His presence and leadership in the shop will be missed. We are grateful for his past and ongoing support of the club.
Due to Adrian stepping down, we are looking for a member to assume the Shop Chair role. That role is responsible for coordinating all shop activities, assuring the safe and economically responsible use of the club’s equipment, keeping records and collecting funds for use of the shop and communicating with the Board. In addition to a Shop Chair, the club also needs a committee of two or three other members who can help perform the duties of the Shop Chair on a rotating basis. If you are interested in any of these roles, please contact our President, Kim Strange by phone (818-497-0519) or email (email@example.com).
Second, during calendar 2019, the club spent a total of $9,631 on shop operating supplies – including replacement wheels for the Genies. More importantly, the amount we spent was $6,623 more than the amount we collected from shop fees in 2019. The expenditure in 2019 for shop operating expenses was significantly more than was spent in prior years. The Board feels that the Lapidary Shop is a critically important function of the club and that the club must continue to support the shop. The Board is also concerned that should the level of financial support to the shop in 2019 continue in the future, that it will limit the club’s ability to do other important things, such as granting scholarships. To resolve this concern, the Board has decided that it is in the best interests of the club to raise the daily fee to use the club’s shop to $10 effective August 1, 2021. The Board will work with the new Shop Chair (when we have one) to monitor ongoing shop operating costs and shop fees collected.
Lastly, while we look for a new Shop Chair, the Board is pleased to announce that Jimmy Peterson has agreed to help out temporarily to coordinate shop activities. Thank you, Jimmy! Further, the Board is excited to announce that the club’s lapidary shop will reopen to our members effective Thursday, June 17, 2021. The shop hours will be Thursday from 5:30p to 10:00p and Saturday from 2:30p to 7:00p.
I’m sure we are all looking forward to being able to reopen the club’s in-person activities. Being unable to meet in person over the last year and a half has been difficult and challenging. I want to thank each of you for your support of our club and I encourage you to contact me if you are interested in a role on the shop committee or if you have feedback on any subject.
